A new benchmark in 16S bacterial identification

At the recent KNVM & NVMM Scientific Spring Meeting 2025 impressive results were shared on the performance of our EasySeq™ Full-length 16S Library Prep Kit. In a multicentre study conducted by nine renowned medical centers across the Netherlands and Belgium, the kit proved highly effective in detecting bacteria in clinical samples.

 

The EasySeq™ Full-length 16S Library Prep Kit not only demonstrated high concordance with existing routine methods, but in many cases, it also detected more bacterial species .

Study Setup

Workflow and Participants

Each center processed twenty clinical samples from sterile body sites—such as synovial fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, and tissue—using both their 16S-based routine molecular methods and the EasySeq™ Full-length 16S kit for Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing.

 

Analysis was performed using Emweb’s Default Bacterial Analysis (16S) pipeline. In addition, the Microbial Community DNA Standard II (Zymo) was processed in triplicate to evaluate reproducibility and interlaboratory performance.

 

Participating centers included: Isala, UMC Groningen, Labmicta, Amsterdam UMC, Leiden UMC, Radboud UMC, Maasstad Hospital, Jessa Hospital and Maastricht UMC.
